J. Drew Lanham

Drew Lanham is a native of Edgefield, South Carolina and a Distinguished Alumni Professor of Wildlife Ecology and Master Teacher at Clemson University. An essayist and poet, his work centers on the struggles between nature, race and identity—especially in the southern USA. His work appears in Orion, Places Journal, Oxford American, Mudd Magazine, Flycatcher, numerous anthologies and in a chapbook of poetry, Sparrow Envy (Holocene Press, 2016).

His highly acclaimed first book, The Home Place: Memoirs of a Colored Man’s Love Affair with Nature (Milkweed Editions, 2016) was selected as a 2017 John Burroughs Medal Finalist and recognized as a nature book of uncommon merit. It was also a 2017 Southern Book Prize winner. Drew is a lifelong birder and nature enthusiast living in the Upstate of South Carolina.
