A huge Earth Day thank you to everyone who participated and made Picnic for Earth a worldwide celebration. From Washington, D.C. to Kabul, Afghanistan, over 12,000 nature-lovers threw down picnic blankets and celebrated Earth Day outdoors with good food and great company.
While we can’t highlight all 307 picnics (in 255 cities and 25 countries!), we wanted to share some of the coolest Picnic for Earth events. And remember: everyday can be Earth Day!
Most Exotic Picnic: Kabul, Afghanistan
We have to admit, we were pretty excited when we got word that the United States Embassy in Kabul, Afghanistan was planning an Embassy-wide community picnic and plant sale. And then our excitement turned to jealousy when we saw their amazing Earth Day cake. Yum!
Sportiest Picnic: Washington, D.C.
Peanuts! Popcorn! The TNC Naturals softball team brought along the concessions — and some friendly competition — to their Earth Day game against Sierra Club on the National Mall.
Most Musical Picnic: Chicago, Illinois
Blind Pilot treated Chicagoans to an Earth Day concert at the Park’s Chase Promenade. The special performance was paired with kid-friendly activities and sustainable cooking demonstrations from renowned Chicago-area chefs.
Best View at a Picnic: Hong Kong
It was an Earth Day hike for all ages in Hong Kong. This adventurous crew celebrated the day with a hike on Dragon’s Back Trail (great name, right?), a ridge in southeastern Hong Kong Island between Wan Cham Shan and Shek O Peak.
Most Educational Picnic: Arusha, Tanzania
TNC’s Alphonce Mallya (in green cap) turned Earth Day into an educational opportunity when he organized a Picnic for Earth and wildlife safari at Tanzania’s Tarangire National Park for 40 students from 8 Arusha high schools.
Best Sense of Humor at a Picnic: Seattle, Washington
Our Washington chapter partnered with Seattle Opera, Seattle Youth Symphony Orchestra and KING FM for a big Earth Day celebration at Seattle Center. The celebration featured performances, face-painting, seed planting and a very fun photo booth (see more hilarious photos on WA’s Facebook page). What fun!
Best Picnic-Inspired Challenge: Santa Fe, New Mexico
The challenge: take a traditional, Peterborough picnic basket and turn it into art. Fifteen New Mexico artists accepted the challenge and created wildly imaginative art (that’s a picnic basket under the fairy dress!). In collaboration with Patina Gallery, the art was displayed at a Picnic for Earth exhibition in Santa Fe.
Most Inspirational Picnic: New York City
New Yorkers shared their pledges for Earth at the Green Festival in NYC. Here, our CEO Mark Tercek and his son Luke share their pledge for the planet. What will you do for Earth? See other inspiring answers on NY’s Facebook page.
Most Food Trucks at a Picnic: Atlanta, Georgia
The perfect addition to any picnic? Food trucks! The Nature Conservancy in Georgia took over Street Food Thursday in Atlanta, GA where lunch-goers tried eclectic cuisine from the city’s best food trucks.
Thanks to everyone who participated in the 2013 Picnic for Earth. See you next year!
