Ten Ways to Save the World

I-voted-sticker

Isn’t it amazing how competition – from the US Open to baseball’s World Series to  American Idol – draws people in? Be they participants or spectators, when a prize is on the line, people take action. They join, they cheer and they vote. They often root for the local hero.

So when The Nature Conservancy partnered with our friends at Rare to take the same approach to conservation by organizing Solution Search, I jumped at the chance to be part of it.

Solution Search is a contest to uncover innovative ways that people around the world are already adapting to the impacts of climate change.

We received over 88 submissions from 37 countries, and I was awed by the incredible work happening across the globe. People are replanting forests, conserving drinking water supplies and rebuilding reefs using new and innovative strategies.

It was challenging, but with the help of our panel of expert judges, the robust field of entries was narrowed to ten finalists.

This is where you come in.

Now is your chance to see the Top Ten and vote for the project that impresses you most. Choose from innovative work that is:

  • Creating new stands of mangrove forest to protect coastal communities in Bangladesh
  • Building low-cost community-operated water treatment systems in India
  • Boosting soil fertility and slowing erosion in Haiti
  • Restoring vegetation and tree cover to reduce flooding in Honduras
  • Protecting people and homes from brushfires through forest management in Togo
  • Balancing livestock grazing and forest management to preserve livelihoods and water supplies in Mexico
  • Reducing crop failure in coastal areas through the use of salt-tolerant seeds in India
  • Increasing reef resilience and fish populations to mitigate sea level rise and preserve livelihoods in Tuvalu
  • Using cook stove waste to rebuild soil nutrients in Africa
  • Maintaining clean water supplies and reducing erosion from flooding in Mexico

The “People’s Choice” winner will receive $20,000 to continue their work. Voting takes place online now through October 4th, and the winner and runners up will be announced on October 23rd.

I hope you’ll make your voice heard. Check out Solution Search now. Vote. Share it on Facebook and Twitter, and encourage your friends to vote, too. You won’t be making someone a pop star, but you’ll be improving lives and protecting nature, all in one click – how cool is that?
