(Editor’s note: This guest post was written by Anna Bacheller and Nancy Eiring. A Conservancy staffer in California, Anna helped coordinate the cheering station at mile 25 (yes, her voice is still hoarse!). Nancy works at the Conservancy’s worldwide office in Arlington, Virginia, and is an avid runner. Her next race: the Berlin Marathon.)
Did you know that you can get fit and save the planet? Well, you can! That’s exactly what actress Sofia Bush and Team Nature Conservancy did last weekend at the San Francisco Marathon. They hit the streets and conquered the hills of San Francisco, raising nearly $100,000 to support the work of The Nature Conservancy! Incredible.
The day was full of camaraderie, teamwork and accomplishment. The morning of the race was chilly, but members of Team Nature Conservancy were undeterred by the finicky San Francisco weather. More than 40 Team Nature Conservancy runners completed events ranging from a 5K race to the full marathon.
As Team Nature Conservancy runners passed mile 25, they were greeted by a team of supporters who came to dish out high-fives, cheers, hoots and hollers. The runners must have been exhausted by that point in the race, but they all made an extra effort to connect with their friends on the sidelines as they passed by.
Post-race, Sophia Bush—who raised over $50,000 and ran the 5K on behalf of The Nature Conservancy for the San Francisco Marathon—joined the cheer station to offer her enthusiasm to marathon runners. Sophia turned out to be a fabulous source of cheerful spirit. Runners passing by while Sophia cheered raised their hands overhead to wave in appreciation, did funny dances, and sometimes even cheered back.
Thanks so much to all of our supporters at the mile 25 cheer station, Sophia included! You all kept Team Nature Conservancy runners moving onto the finish line! And a big thanks to our friends at Crowdrise for helping coordinate our fundraising efforts. And of course, thanks and congratulations to the Team Nature Conservancy runners and those who made contributions on behalf of The Nature Conservancy. We think you are amazing!
Feel left out? You don’t have to be. We still have 3 entries available for the ING NYC Marathon in November. If you are interested, let us know! You can make a difference while participating in this world-renowned marathon, running through the 5 boroughs of New York.
And if marathons aren’t your thing…don’t despair. You can join Team Nature Conservancy and support us while you train for any race of your choice. It’s simple! Either join Team Nature Conservancy on our site or on Crowdrise .
