Speak Up for Nature! Send a Message to President Obama

It’s sometimes easy to feel disconnected from nature. Stepping into our offices each morning or sitting in our living rooms each night can make us forget the vital role nature plays in our lives – from the food we eat and water we drink to the places we seek for recreation and spiritual fulfillment.

But new and growing threats – including overdevelopment, pollution and a changing climate – increasingly threaten the natural systems we all rely upon for survival.

Americans right now have an unprecedented opportunity to speak out about their connections to nature – and what needs to be done to ensure the places we cherish today will be there for our children and grandchildren tomorrow.

President Obama has launched a national dialogue about conservation in America, gathering insights and ideas from citizens across the country to create a road map for protecting our country’s natural heritage.

Each and every one of us has a role to play. Just as we rely on nature for survival, nature relies on us to thrive.

What will happen if we as a nation do not take action to protect the places we love? Plants and animals will be separated from their natural homes, watersheds will be disconnected from their downstream estuaries, we will have fewer experiences with the great outdoors, and future generations will lose touch with the incredible landscapes and natural areas that sustain us all.

You can make a difference. You have until Sept. 30 to tell President Obama what should be on the country’s conservation to-do list.

The Nature Conservancy is working with partners to get 1 million Americans to make their voices heard. With America losing 3 million acres of land to development each year, now is the time to speak out. Once you submit your comments, you can help us generate even more voices in support of protecting our lands and waters by sharing this article with friends by email, Facebook or Twitter.

To protect the legacy of America’s Great Outdoors, we must:

  • Create a network of large areas of restored and conserved land, water and coastlines around which Americans can build productive and healthy lives.
  • Fully fund the Land and Water Conservation Fund, making it a permanent and dedicated source of conservation dollars to protect our natural places, parks and recreation areas, working lands and cultural heritage.
  • Keep our nation’s lands and waters healthy and strong enough to survive the impacts of climate change, so they can continue to provide us with the food, water, shelter, income and recreation we rely upon every day.
  • Provide incentives for conservation easements on working lands that support both people and nature. Private owners hold 70 percent of the land in America. These working farms, forests and ranches provide important habitat and are a foundation of the American economy, culture and way of life.
  • Create urban greenspaces that enhance the economies, environment and quality of life of metropolitan areas. Parks, trails and natural areas in and around urban metropolitan areas are essential to economic development and reducing the impacts of global warming while also reconnecting all Americans — particularly young people and people of color – to nature.

We all have a role to play in protecting the legacy of America’s Great Outdoors. Thank you for adding your voice.

If you believe in the work we’re doing, please lend a hand.

  1. Stop killing wild life that live in our own back yards!!!!

  2. Dear President Obama,

As a big supporter of yours, I am urging you to take positive steps toward making real changes that will improve the health of our environment. I applaud you for your leadership in the health care system and economic crisis. I hope that your agenda will also include real and important changes that can impact conservation as well. Here are issues that are critical for the environment:

    * Create a network of large areas of restored and conserved land, water and coastlines around which Americans can build productive and healthy lives.
    * Fully fund the Land and Water Conservation Fund, making it a permanent and dedicated source of conservation dollars to protect our natural places, parks and recreation areas, working lands and cultural heritage.
    * Keep our nation’s lands and waters healthy and strong enough to survive the impacts of climate change, so they can continue to provide us with the food, water, shelter, income and recreation we rely upon every day.
    * Provide incentives for conservation easements on working lands that support both people and nature. Private owners hold 70 percent of the land in America. These working farms, forests and ranches provide important habitat and are a foundation of the American economy, culture and way of life.

  3. I would like to see states and counties plan their commercial areas in a more environment considered way. I see shopping malls, especially strip malls going up into natural areas and leaving behind old buildings to sit for years to be re-established. You see this in places like South Carolina and Florida and several other places. I know that growth is important to the economy buy I think there is enormous room for using what is there, re-vitalizing older parts of towns before going into natural areas. There could to much better tax intensives for doing this.
How many yards do you have to go before there is another drug store?
Why can there be no trees in parking lots?
We need more research done on invasive plants, and bugs that destroy trees birth control for certain species of animals that are overpopulating urban areas.
Stop cutting down so many trees to build. Leave more natural areas in every community.
I’m a tree lover-”Tree of Life” is the foundation of my business.

  4. We need to create more greenspaces in and around our cities anad make them available to the citizens, young and old. And more education needs to be done in the rural areas concerning the protection of small spaces which could be valuable places for plants and animals, etc.

  5. Nature and wilderness should be protected for the benefit of all. We must ensure that ensure that the places we cherish today will be there for our children and grandchildren tomorrow.

  6. Dear President Obama,

Please fully fund the Land and Water Conservation Fund
(LWCF) at $900 million a year. Purchase the inholdings of
national parks and other government lands.Provide funding for conservation easements to protect conservation land, farms,
forests, and ranches. Thank you for your support.

    Sincerely,

  7. dear president obama,
i am glad to know that after your selection as president of america ,americans have started thinking and working towards the ritr path.
i shall suggest that nature should be treated as an emergency basis as a doctor treat a patiant during deseas. and the same treament proceadure should be follow to conserv and bring the nature towards the initial position or towards the healling position.
i am positive and confident to say that we cannot only conserve the nature but we can also bring it back towards the betterment.
humen are the most prominent factor to demage the nature so people should be more and more educated in this regard and i know that from the first day your prefference is education and its a very good signal for the whole word and as well as for the nature conservancy.
    thank you sir.
    faithfully

  8. I think we need to clean up the garbage that has flowed into the oceans, and more programs that will help clean up the garbage on land as well. Because what we dispose does not decompose right away, we need to have recycle programs that help recycle instead of just burying garbage into landfills, especially with items that can be recycled but we do not. There is a lot of garbage around the world to be collected, i think it is about time we help clean up a mess that has been laying around for thousands of years.

  9. Please take the politics OUT of Saving the wolves and buffalo in Yellowstone in MT. I am so sick and tired of the cattleman running the show when those animals destroy the land so horribly. I am also extremely upset at how the buffalo are being destroyed due to bogus cases of brucellosis, of which there has NEVER been a case of that disease going into the cattle!! It’s a bogus thing to keep the elk for the hunters, and it’s ELK who have the brucellosis!! YUCK, I won’t even eat that stuff anymore!! You have Federal agencies there who are hazing and upsetting the ecology, these people are supposed to SAVE the ecology!! The wolves keep the balance of nature the way it was meant to be – survival of the fitess!! What’s with the game that a Federal judge can rule one way and the next day somebody can change that?? The wolves are on and off the protected list like ping pong balls – they need to be ON it!! And the buffalo need to left alone!!

  10. if obama wants kids to saty in skool den y isnt he doing sumthing bout kids that dont have a social security number cuz most of them r good kids that want to study but cant

  11. President Obama:

I really believe that Jesus Christ, annointed you to be President of the United States Of America. Last week’s midterm elections were devastating and certainly did not do much to boost democrats morale. But you can’t give up. You are a man with the wisdom of Solomon. Sometimes you just have to step away from everything, go into your closet and pray pray pray. Perhaps you need to fast and pray. Seek God’s guidance, remember Jesus words, seek you shall find, knock and it shall be open. ask and believe and you shall recieve. In the Book of Matthew, one of my favorite scripture says “When God be for you who can be against you”. You only need the Lord Jesus Christ on your side, not the Republicans. Another favorite scripture says “No Weapon Formed Against You Shall Prosper” Your emenies will come at you in one way and flee from you in many ways. He didn’t say that it was going to be easy, but He did promise to go with you and He said He would never leave you nor forsake you. I make mention of you in my prayers daily President Obama, as I know many Christians in America do. Keep fighting for the middle class, we need you. We Love You and Thank You for all You are doing. You Are One Of The Best Presidents We Have In America!
