Oh, reality shows. The drama. The fights. The….egg laying?

That’s what’s happening on the third season of Knock on Wood…a nature reality blog starring five mating pairs of red-cockaded woodpeckers (RCWs) nesting in prepared cavities throughout The Nature Conservancy’s Disney Wilderness Preserve in central Florida.

Since 2007, biologists have brought in 26 juvenile RCWs to pioneer a new population. Today 19 are known to remain on the preserve, far exceeding the usual retention rate of 50 percent.

Conservancy staff will be following the five couples – George and Gracie, Zelda and Arlo, June and Ward, Scarlett and Rhett, and Forrest and Brooke – as their baby RCWs begin to hatch.

On May 5, George and Gracie welcomed a chick (the second year in a row they were the first couple to do so). Arlo and Zelda and Rhett and Scarlett weren’t far behind.

What will happen next? Follow all the action on the Knock on Wood reality blog to get the latest news!
