The Best Dam Holiday Gift Ever » WOPA100125_D019

(ALL INTERNAL and LIMITED EXTERNAL USES) A portion of the old Howland Dam on the Penobscot River in Howland, Maine. This is one of several dams that will be removed, or in this case altered, to restore the Penobscot to a more natural flow. An unprecedented array of partners known as the Penobscot River Restoration Trust have come together to accomplish this goal. The trust is a nonprofit organization made up of the Penobscot Indian Nation and six environmental groups  (American Rivers, Atlantic Salmon Federation, Maine Audubon, Natural Resources Council of Maine, The Nature Conservancy and Trout Unlimited). The Trust is working with a variety of state and federal agencies to implement the restoration project. PHOTO CREDIT: © Bridget Besaw
