One idea to consider for wrappng paper is to buy fabric scraps (remnants) to wrap presents. We do this in my family and just fold up the fabric for next year. Try your fabric store after christmas for super cheap holiday fabrics. Also easier to store than left over wrapping paper and last for many years. Also great for birthdays and showers, etc.

December in-season produce: Any fall vegetable or fruit with some shelf or fridge-drawer life: apples, carrots, (and YES) turnips and parsnips, which are tasty white potato substitutes, sweet potatoes, pumpkin, the list goes on and on. Alton Brown has a recipe for parsnip muffins. We have lots of gift bags which we re-use year after year.

Root vegetables? Like a bag of Terra chips, do you mean? Are we supposed to snack on turnips and parsnips? That's just what I look forward to at Christmas, baking turnip chips with the kids, yeah.

One suggestion is to eat "in season produce." In most of the country, in December, nothing is in season, so this is not at all helpful. If you can't think of a useful suggestion on food, maybe you should just let us eat cookies.

Great suggestions. I love the idea of a media swap, which could be fun in the workplace or with friends as well. For families, I think it's great to emphasize traditions of spending time together (playing board games, sledding, volunteering, etc.) rather than having so much emphasis on gifts.
